Scrapbooks for Solastalgia
Solastalgia is defined as a longing for home, or homesickness experienced without ever leaving because the environment has experienced distress, and feels unfamiliar. Scrapbooks for Solastalgia is a collection of artist books that archive and preserve the intimate and interpersonal relationships that shape how we are in this unfamiliar and hurt world, the world's changing ecologies, and how we remember it all.
This is an ongoing series as a means of reflecting on role of memory and intimacy to guide the processing of emotions that come up in confronting eco-grief, climate change, habitat fragmentation, and extraction.
Each scrapbook is sites-specific and utilizes an embodied fieldwork practice to collect ephemera and assemble these materials alongside personal reflections on what it means to get in right relationship and nurture belonging to land while navigating the messy processing of memory. Our home ecologies are changing—this is one way to grieve and mobilize.
